On Tuesday, the Undergraduate Student Government at IUPUI announced that Clara Pineda won their latest presidential election. Pineda ran unopposed, and 0.6% of the undergraduate student body participated in the election. 109 students voted for her ticket, and one student voted no confidence.
Although turnout was low, the election carries significant implications for how student fees will be spent and who holds influence over the emerging Indiana University Indianapolis administration, as the soon-to-be independent public university begins expanding its presence in the state capital.
The USG oversees a budget of more than $88,000, funded primarily through student activity fees. That money supports student organizations, campus initiatives and officer stipends. In 2022, about 52% of the budget was spent on stipends—the highest proportion among Indiana’s three largest public universities.
The USG’s influence on campus culture and spending priorities has drawn scrutiny in recent years, particularly as its budget decisions increasingly reflect ideological programming.

In 2022, the USG’s fall leadership conference was classified under “executive enrichment” in their budget and cost nearly $2,900. In 2023, student leaders invited the Social Justice Scholars to deliver a lecture centered on intersectionality, a controversial academic theory rooted in critical social thought, at the same event. The presentation followed remarks by Interim Chancellor Carol Anne Murdoch-Kinch and framed systemic oppression as a function of overlapping identity categories such as race, gender and class.

While organizers said participation was voluntary and aimed at fostering cultural awareness, the program appeared to some to mark an intersection between political advocacy and student government operations.
