The Indianapolis Student archives

The Collegiate Commons visited the Ruth Lilly Special Collections Archive to take a look at historic student newspapers from the IUPUI and Indiana University Indianapolis extension campus between 1959 and 1971. The Indianapolis Student is one historic student newspaper that ran between 1958 and 1969, shortly before the Indiana University Indianapolis extension campus and the Purdue University Indianapolis extension campus merged to form IUPUI.

These archives are by no means complete, but offer an important look at the history of the university, and are not currently archived online elsewhere. The College Commons focused on the most interesting pages and will leave the rest to the official university archives.

The editorials are especially notable as they provide an inside look into the attitudes of students at the IU extension campus in the middle of the previous century, including concerns about the student government and a lack of student involvement on campus, many of which have also been raised by students in the present day. The May 1969 edition is also especially notable because it details the plans of the merger that created IUPUI, which dissolves in the Fall of 2024 as Purdue in Indianapolis (PIN) once again becomes separated from IU-Indianapolis.

The Sagamore was the IUPUI student newspaper that ran between 1971 and 2009, and its editions are viewable up until 2005 here. The Sagamore originated from a merger between the IU-Onomatopeia and the Purdue Component newspapers.

The Campus Citizen is another IUPUI student news publication that started publishing in 2011, while The Collegiate Commons started publishing in 2023.
