SEEKING: Editor-in-chief, Indianapolis campus editor

The Indiana Commons has grown thanks to readers like you, and members of our editorial board are moving on from the publication or graduating, which means we have had several editor jobs open up for Indiana residents.

Editor-in-chief –

Qualifications:

• Highly motivated. It is pretty much a part time job running this publication.
• Passion for our mission statement. This is probably the most important qualification. You could be completely illiterate and if you’re passionate enough about the missions statement and independent journalism in general, you would still be in the running for the job.
• Charismatic. Motivating students to not only write articles but be passionate about the mission of an organization is difficult business.
• Good time-management. You would have to commit to leading a pitch meeting every other week (likely over Zoom) to talk about the issues facing campus and the local community, as well as any potential column ideas. Ability to delegate is an important part of this as well.

What we’ll train you in (if you already have these skills then even better):

• AP style. This is the basic template for our articles, albeit we do stray from it in some instances (e.g. we use the Oxford comma if it makes a sentence clearer, and if AP style is blatantly biased or scientifically inaccurate we use more precise terminology).
• Editing. This is of course a necessary skill to have as an editor-in-chief, as you give the final approval for all articles written.
• Writing. As editor-in-chief, you would be expected to take the lead on any editorial opinions responding to events on campus (without contradicting our mission statement) or time-essential pitches that no one picks up.
• Ability to use WordPress. This is what our site is hosted on, and you would likely need to take the lead or delegate posting content on the website and other operational tasks.

Campus Editor – We are looking for one campus editor specifically at IU Indianapolis to take the lead on recruiting and pitching news ideas on campus while maintaining the status of the publication as a registered student organization.

Qualifications:

• Highly motivated. The goal of this position is to be the equivalent of an editor-in-chief but focused on a specific campus, so it would require more independence.
• Passion for our mission statement. This is probably the most important qualification.

Copy-editor – The only requirement for this position is knowing AP style and being willing to edit articles.
