45th United States President Donald Trump is projected to have won the 2024 presidential election with 312 electoral votes, winning all swing states and the popular vote. The projection came around 1:30 a.m. on Nov. 6 following a long night of vote counting after the polls were closed on Nov. 5 (Photo Credit: JIM WATSON/AFP VIA GETTY IMAGES).
Indiana was the first state to declare their electoral votes for Trump after their polls closed at 6:00 p.m. Sen. Mike Braun was also quickly projected to win the Indiana gubernatorial race, and Rep. Jim Banks was projected to take his seat in the Senate.
Indiana also maintained a Republican supermajority in both chambers of the Indiana General Assembly, with several close races in central Indiana that took several days for the results to be confirmed.
Republicans are also projected nationally to win a majority in both the Senate and House of Representatives.
Trump, for his part, will be officially declared the 47th President of the United States after votes are certified on Jan. 6, 2025, and his inauguration will come on Jan. 20.
This will be only the second time in United States History that a president has served a nonconsecutive term, meaning two terms not directly following each other. The first to do so was President Grover Cleveland, the 22nd and 24th president of the United States, serving during the late 19th century.
Trump gained a significant boost from gains among Black and Hispanic voters, and especially among male voters.
Part of Trump’s appeal may be rooted in his cultural and economic populism as well as his anti establishment persona, as well as what some experts are saying were missed opportunities by the Harris campaign to speak directly to young men especially about their policy platform.
