Celebrate Indianapolis’ enduring immigrant legacy at the Slovenian National Home’s Statehood Day event June 21.
The free event will be held from 1-4 p.m. at the Slovenian National Home, 2717 W. 10th St.
Cultural activities include Slovenian wine and soup tastings, as well as lessons on how to make traditional Slovenian sausage and a dessert called potica.
Statehood Day
Slovenia is a European country located south of Austria and east of Italy. Statehood Day commemorates the day Slovenia became an independent nation, June 24, 1991.
The country was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the end of World War I.
Hundreds of thousands of Slovenians left the empire and moved to the U.S. in the late 1800s and 1900s. In Indianapolis, many Slovenians moved into the Haughville neighborhood.
Slovenia later became a part of Yugoslavia, which was absorbed by the Soviet Union after World War II. Slovenia became an independent nation a few months before the Soviet Union dissolved.
