A free baby shower for expecting parents will be held on Aug. 6.
The event aims to support and celebrate soon-to-be parents who are experiencing financial or social challenges. Families will receive essential baby products and participate in parenting and newborn education sessions.
This is the first time the Burmese American Community Institute will host the event. The group received a state health grant to help fund more maternal and child health initiatives.
Ashlyn Karim, a community engagement coordinator for the Burmese American Community Institute, said she and her colleagues know firsthand how difficult it can be to find baby resources for immigrants.
“We know how tough it can be and how much goes into the whole process and getting ready to take care of the baby and yourself,” said Karim, who is a mother. “So we’re just looking to give back to the community.”
Karim said participants will also play a myth or fact game that aims to bust misinformation and superstitions about parenting, as well as listen to a speaker from a local hospital.

The Community Baby Shower begins at 2 p.m. Aug. 6 at the Burmese American Community Institute, 5246 Bluff Road.
Parents must register online by Aug. 3. Each participant may bring up to two guests.
