The Beech Grove City Schools Board met on Monday, May 13, to present awards to students and staff, including Wendy Eckstein, recognize district accomplishments, and approve several operational items ahead of the school year’s end. The meeting included a mix of celebrations, personnel updates and facilities planning.
Wendy Eckstein Receives Bair Factor Award
Superintendent Laura Hammack opened the meeting by announcing this year’s recipient of the district’s prestigious Bair Factor Award: longtime educator Wendy Eckstein. Although Eckstein could not attend in person, the ceremony proceeded in her honor, with Principal Ryan Morgan joining Hammack in presenting the award.
“This is a tribute to those whose presence, spirit and contributions embody the optimism and heart that Dr. [Steve] Bair brought to every corner of our district,” Hammack said, describing the award’s significance. Eckstein was praised for her decades of service as a special education and English teacher, her leadership in extracurriculars and her unwavering dedication to students despite serious medical challenges.
“She showed up every day with everything she had, giving her all to her students, to her colleagues, and to her school community,” Hammack continued.
“She is someone who faces her fears head on, day after day, with unwavering courage and determination,” Morgan added. “Wendy, you are more than a teacher. You are a warrior, a lion chaser and a beacon of strength.”
Student and Athlete Awards
Each school presented Student of the Month honors to standout students for academic performance, leadership and positive attitude.
At Hornet Park Elementary, Principal Rob Adamson introduced first grader Kinsley Mack, citing multiple teacher testimonials.
“She is dependable and always willing to help others,” Adamson said, quoting Mrs. Lewis. He also mentioned that Mrs. Gillespie called her “the sweetest little friend,” and Mrs. Ryder described her as “very aware and has the biggest heart for others.”
Ronald Never, a fourth grader at South Grove, was celebrated by Miss Carter for his leadership and helpfulness.
“Ronald’s willingness to support others not only makes the class run more smoothly, but adds to a positive classroom culture,” shared instructional coach Miss Major.
At Central Intermediate School, Principal Andrew Karr praised fifth grader Avery Jackson, calling her “truly gifted” both academically and artistically. Her teachers noted her strong second semester, saying she “completes her work at a very high level and is generally a very positive young lady.”
Middle schooler Rosemary Miller was described by her teachers as consistently engaged and positive. “Her enthusiasm for learning is contagious,” said Miss Hajj, while Mr. Mave added, “She is always engaged, always willing to put in the effort.”
Beech Grove High School recognized senior Adella Walls for her artistic and academic excellence.
“Her artistic style is a true reflection of her individuality,” said art teacher Miss Tingle, while Spanish teacher Miss Cook noted, “She frequently scores the highest grade on exams and helped lead the Spanish club.”
Athlete of the Month honors went to Nathan Kinder and Nathaniel Davis. Kinder, a top performer on the boys’ Cross Country team, was praised by Coach Adam Messer for his work ethic and leadership. “He does a lot of dirty work required to become a better runner,” Messer wrote.
Davis, a first-time boys volleyball player, leads the team in blocks and hitting percentage. “It’s really his work ethic that is what sets him apart,” said Coach Beaver, adding that Davis maintains a 3.9 GPA and is “a pillar example” of a student-athlete.
Superintendent Hammack Named District 5 Superintendent of the Year
In a surprise announcement, Dr. Jeff Butts, Superintendent of Wayne Township Schools, presented Dr. Hammack with the 2025 District 5 Superintendent of the Year award on behalf of the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents.
“She’s done a phenomenal job. Her leadership has been outstanding in a very tough time,” Butts said.
A visibly moved Hammack responded, “I truly have no words… It is such an honor to represent Beech Grove in this way”.
Operational Updates and Board Actions
Brian Garman, Director of Personnel and Operations, presented updates on staffing, transportation, safety, and facilities. He reported positive hiring trends and noted the arrival of a long-awaited Micro Bird bus. He also highlighted cost savings from a new custodial services contract, estimating $152,000 in annual savings.
Three key action items were approved by the board:
- An updated personnel report (with two items tabled for further discussion);
- Renewal of the food service contract with Chartwells for 2025–26;
- Authorization to proceed with a custodial services contract with HES Facilities Management.
The board also held a public hearing and approved two resolutions related to the appropriation and issuance of general obligation bonds for capital improvements, including roof and HVAC upgrades, paving projects and new school buses.
The meeting closed with reminders about upcoming end-of-year events, including graduation on May 24.
“It is going to be 75° and sunny with a cool breeze,” Hammack said cheerfully. “We are looking very, very forward to it”
