The Indiana University Student Government presidential election recently closed out with a victory for the ACTION ticket, which included Zachary Goldberg and Ava Smith, both sophomores. The duo won a close victory over the EMPOWER ticket, 54.38% to 45.61%.
Although many of their proposed policies were similar, Goldberg, now IUSG-president elect, told The Indiana Commons that his ticket’s outreach efforts were key to their success.
“[Our ticket differentiated ourselves by] our constant attempts to reach out to every corner of campus we could,” Goldberg said. “At the end of the day, communities who have been overlooked… [during] student government elections in the past were crucial to our success this year… [including] the Jewish and Greek communities.”
The Indiana Commons also asked about Goldberg’s plans to accomplish his ticket’s priorities once he takes office.
“For us, we’re looking to immediately get to work. Once all things have been settled by the courts, we’re ready to draft executive orders, proclamations, and start working with the new Congress to implement bills we would like to see,” Goldberg said. “Further, upon our entry into office, we’ll make sure to be tabling actively and get the IUSG hotline up and ready as the year ends so we can get feedback this summer and all next year.”

Notably, it calls for the expansion and protection of DEI initiatives at the same time as the Trump Administration federally and the Braun Administration at a state level have sought to limit DEI initiatives in public institutions.
Goldberg has also committed to increasing transparency in the IUSG upon taking office.
This comes after a difficult year for the IUSG, in which the winning ticket was disqualified from last year’s presidential election, executive board members potentially violated IUSG bylaws and a voter registration initiative may have violated state law.
